GB’s women hit the target in the Dominican Republic
Great Britain’s women’s archery team has won a second successive World Cup gold medal in the recurve team event.
The team, consisting of Alison Williamson, Naomi Folkard and Charlotte Burgess, struck gold after an exhilarating final against Italy. Last August the team won in Dover and are thrilled to have defended their title on foreign turf.
Although the team trailed after the first and second ends, they managed to finish strongly, with Burgess securing the gold medal with a 10, producing a final score of 207-196.
After such an impressive performance at the first archery World Cup tournament of 2008, all three women are hoping to be selected as part of the team traveling to Beijing for this years Olympic Games.
Team manager Hilda Gibson said, “It’s a great start to the Olympic year, because they’ve been up against the best in the world over the past few days, and this really is a great confidence booster.”
The women’s compound team unfortunately didn’t fair so well and were at the heart of a bizarre ending to the final day of competition.
The team, consisting of Lucy Holderness, Nicky Hunt and Nichola Simpson, were up against Mexico, and after trailing by five points, managed to pull things back, seemingly winning the bronze medal.
The scoreboard showed a GB victory, but later officials deemed that the match had actually been tied, and so a sudden death shoot-off had to be played. The teams tied after the first attempts with 29 points-a-piece, but the second attempt saw the Mexicans take the medal, scoring 28 points to GB’s 27.
