Five of England’s Women’s football team have become the latest recruits on Sport England’s Sporting Champions initiative.
The girls were selected after a great team performance at last year’s World Cup in China, where they were knocked out in the quarter-final by two times World Champions the USA.
Lianne Sanderson, Jill Scott, Siobham Chamberlian, Rachael Brown, and Alex Scott will now join a whole host of sporting champions to inspire young people to get active and make reality their ambitions to achieve in sport. Paul Veasey, Head of Children and Young People at Sport England said,” I am thrilled the England ladies have agreed to become Champions, hearing about their footballing knowledge will be great at motivating more young people in sport. ”Funded by Sport’s , Sporting Champions delivers 450 visits a year, directly reaching 125,000 young people with an estimated 500,000 being reached through the web, media, e-campaigns and e-newsletters. The scheme gets face-to-face with young people, travelling to schools and community groups, holding interactive sessions as well as sporting demonstrations and coaching workshops. The aim is to show young people that they can live up to their potential in sport, with the incentive to take this into all areas of their lives. With women’s football being the number one participation sport for girls in England the England ladies are hoping to inspire young girls to get fit and active, with the dream that maybe one day they will be pulling on the Three Lions shirt themselves.
